Hal, the husband of Jasmine (Kate Blanchett Cate Blanchett), is arrested for commercial fraud and ends her life in prison, leaving New York for San Francisco to join her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins Sally Hawkins). Returning to the world of ordinary people from a spendthrift life, Jasmine has a nervous breakdown. She often talks to herself, immerses herself in memories of the past, and doesn't fit in with the people around her. She doesn't like Ginger's ex-husband Aguie, let alone Ginger's current boyfriend Chill. Jasmine got a job at a dentist's office and went back to school, but her life was still a mess. Until at a party, she met a civil servant who was funny, handsome and rich, and soon won the heart of Jasmine. Jasmine's life seemed to be back on track, and just as they were getting ready to buy wedding rings, Ginger's ex-husband Augie darkened her world.
