Dr. Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan Pierce Brosnan), a volcanologist at the United States Geological Survey, was sent to visit a small town on Mount Dante, a dormant volcano near Washington. Harry's arrival in town coincides with Mayor Rachel (Linda Hamilton Linda Hamilton) hosting the celebration because the town has just won the second best living environment award in the United States. Rachel and her two children showed Harry around. Passing by the hot spring lake, Harry noticed that the lake was too acidic and found two boiled floating corpses.
