The film is adapted from real historical events and tells the story of one of the most famous rebellions in American history: Newton Knight. Nate, a native of Mississippi, defected from the Confederacy during the Civil War, organized a group of soldiers and established a country called the Free Nation of Jones in his hometown. Nate not only married a black female slave and refused to return to serve in the Confederate Army, but also liberated slaves in Mississippi, a territory of the Confederate government, which was rare in the United States at that time and made him a local legend in Mississippi.
