In a big hotel in Berlin. At that time the whole of Germany was shrouded in the shadow of economic crisis. Many people from different walks of life are gathered in the luxurious hotel. Among them are Pleisinger, a financial giant who is in trouble and hiding from the limelight, Grusinskaya, a ballet dancer who wants to commit suicide, and von Gegen, an old baron who was made a living by gambling. Pleisinger's old lonely old Klingen, as well as the beautiful young but greedy and selfish stenographer Fran Ling and so on. The 5th Academy Award for Best Picture is a masterpiece of MGM's first all-Star Movie in the early 1930s. The whole film takes a luxury hotel in Berlin as the stage of life, showing the strange experiences of five groups of characters in the same day. Although the narrative techniques are well-behaved, the performances of several big stars are quite wonderful, fully grasping the personality and situation of the characters, including Russian ballerinas facing career crisis, gambling-addicted barons, terminally ill small potatoes, entrepreneurs and so on. These characters staged the joys and sorrows of life in a three-line staggered way, and the plot developed smoothly.
