Matt (Spencer Spencer Tracy) is the editor-in-chief of the newspaper. He is an advanced thinker who opposes racial discrimination and advocates freedom and equality. It is such a man that Matt is completely dumbfounded when his beloved daughter Joey (Katherine Horton Katharine Houghton) comes to him with her boyfriend John (Sydney Poitier Sidney Poitier). It turned out that John was a black boy, and Matt never dreamed that the stories he usually saw in novels and TV would happen to him. Matt was caught in a dilemma between liberalism and an inextricable prejudice against blacks, and John's father was strongly opposed to the marriage. In the face of great pressure, Joey and John were not discouraged. Matt was thoughtful when they saw their daughter's strength.
