The story revolves around Anne-Marie Stryker (Defiine Seliger Delphine Seyrig) and the three characters next to her-her lover Michael Richardson, fascinated by her vice consul, and a beggar whose life trajectory is parallel to her. The female beggar followed Anna from the French colony in Southeast Asia, often harassing the embassy garden, and several of her children died; the vice consul went crazy after being frustrated by her obsession with her, targeting lepers, dogs, and even shooting themselves. At last he was dismissed from his post. Then Anna traveled to an island with friends, and he tracked it. Anna was finally overwhelmed in her chaotic feelings and threw herself into the sea. The film consists of 74 shots and more than 500 voiceover sentences. The characters in the picture do not speak, and director Duras insists that all voices must be the tradition of narration.
