The story takes place during World War I, when Johnny (Timms Bertrams Timothy Bottoms) is an ordinary American youth who picks up his gun and goes to war in the mood of serving his country. Unfortunately, in the cruel war, Johnny was seriously injured, lost his handsome face and completely lost his ability to act. The crippled Johnny was sent to the army hospital, and the thoughts of his loved ones supported Johnny through one night after another full of pain and despair. Foss (Diane Vasi Diane Varsi) is a nurse in the hospital who takes care of Johnny. Because Johnny's vocal cords were damaged and unable to speak, Foss used Morse code to talk to her. The kind and gentle Foss gradually awakened Johnny's desire for survival, but soon Foss disappeared.
