The story takes place in the early 1930s, when Lillian (Jane Fonda Jane Fonda) goes to Vienna to find her former good friend Julia (Vanessa Radcliffe Vanessa Redgrave). After arriving at her destination, Lillian learns that Julia was admitted to the hospital after a fierce conflict with fascist supporters and then disappeared. After Lillian returned to her life, she received an unexpected letter from Julia, in which Julia asked her to help her send $50,000 to anti-Nazi groups, despite the great danger at the time. But Lillian promised Julia, and finally, two friends she hadn't seen in years were reunited in Berlin. However, it was not long before Lillian received the news of Julia's death, and in her grief, Lillian realized that she still had unfinished work.
