On March 10, 1906, a fire triggered a horrific gas explosion, smoke billowed for three weeks, and more than 1200 mines were buried deep in the Guriere mine. A special rescue team of German miners arrived in France from Westphalia to join the rescue. Director George William Buster's "Friendship of comrades" is based on this event. There is no doubt that the film is the pinnacle of German socialist films of its time. Babster painted a map of the mining area along the Franco-German border, when the aftermath of the first world war was receding, and France's prosperity and chauvinism contrasted sharply with Germany's inflation and high unemployment. Both the visual style and the unity spirit shown in the film stem from the Soviet social realism at that time, but Babster holds a more complex social critical attitude than any Russian director. Only such a traumatized and skeptical Berlin pessimist can produce such a touching and sincere work. Like Antonioni's Red Desert, Buster shows the human nature of industrial areas and how people adapt to their own construction.
