The Tokugawa shogunate fell and Japan entered an enlightened democratic era. However, during the Meiji period, corruption and greed still existed in the government, the army and even the merchants. When the blood tax riot broke out in Meiji eight years, primary school teacher Masaaki Oshima (Masaaki Otaka) was attacked by riot farmers on his way to travel with his family.
