In 1964, Gao Renny (Jeremy Irons), an accountant of the French Embassy in China, was fascinated by Madame Butterfly on the stage while watching the opera. After the play, he took the initiative to make love to Song Liling, the Peking Opera actress who played Lady Butterfly. The contact again and again makes the two lonely hearts fall in love. However, the good times did not last long, the Cultural Revolution broke out, and there was no news from Song Liling. In 1968, Song Liling came to France and was reunited with Gao Renni. Years later, when Gao Renni was charged with espionage, it was Song Liling in a suit who stood on the witness stand. Gao Renny, who refers to a man as a woman, has become the laughingstock of all France. How will these two men face each other and their love?
