In 1973, Chilean Army Commander Augusto Pinochet, with the secret support of the US government, led the armed forces and police forces to launch a coup and jointly overthrew the socialist government under President Allende. 3000 leftists were killed in the coup and millions of Allende supporters became political prisoners or forced into exile.
