The film tells the story of a love story between white hero Hank (Billy Bob Townton) and black woman Lacia (Halle Berry) entangled in death and racial discrimination in a small town in the south where racial prejudice is entrenched. Hank grew up in an extremely racist, conservative white family and was deeply influenced by his father. After his father retired, Hank took over the execution. Just after the execution of a black man on death row, Hank unexpectedly met his wife, Lacia. Soon, the two fell in love.
