Nicholas and Alexandra (1971)

This film, written by James Goldman, describes the life of Nicholas II, the last czar in Russia, from 1904 to the execution of his family after the Russian Revolution in 1918. It is an epic film with a heavy atmosphere, and the story is a bit monotonous and dull. Director Franklin J. Schaffner's style is more dignified. Excellent art and costume design enabled the Russian palace scenery to be reproduced on the screen. Actors such as Michael Jaston were also generally excellent. This film has won two awards for best art director and best costume design.
