John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Kate (Vera Farmiga Vera Farmiga), who are expecting a baby after an unexpected miscarriage, are devastated, Kate's spirit is on the verge of collapse, and their marriage is in jeopardy. In order to save their broken marriage, the couple went to the orphanage to adopt a child. Here, they meet the maverick little girl Esther (played by Isabelle Fuhrman Isabel Forman). The unique temperament of the little girl attracted Mr. and Mrs. John, and eventually Esther became a member of their family. However, with the arrival of Esther, all kinds of strange events followed. Kate vaguely felt that there was an unknown side behind the little girl with an angel face.
