When the summer vacation comes, 10-year-old Willard Young (Elijah Wood) is sent by his mother to a coastal town called Paradise. He will spend the summer vacation at the house of his mother's best friend Lily Reed. On his first day of arrival, Willard meets Billie Parker (Sola Porch), a 9-year-old girl from Reed's neighbor. Although Billie is a troublesome tomboy, which is very different from Willard's obedient personality, they still become good friends. Together they rowed, swam, watched small animals, and snuck into the barn to peek at Billie's sister making out with her boyfriend. At the Reed family, Willard soon discovered that there seemed to be a big problem with Lily's relationship with her husband Ben Reed-they had little communication and could hardly smile. By chance, Willard knew the cause of the problem in their relationship and tried to help them get out of the tragedy.
