Stage actress Elizabeth (Liv Uman Liv Ullmann) forgets her lines during a performance, then refuses to speak for months and is sent to a mental hospital. Alma, the nurse who takes care of her (Bibi Anderson Bibi Andersson) is blamed by the doctor for not doing her job, and the hospital arranges her to take Elizabeth to recuperate in Beachfront Villas. After the two arrived at the villa, Elizabeth improved, but still refused to speak and respond. Alma often tried to break the silence by talking to her, but she still got no response and finally had to talk about her emotional problems with her fiance. Alma peeked at Elizabeth's letter to the doctor, found that she was talking about herself in it, and scolded Elizabeth angrily. Facing the completely silent Elizabeth, Alma almost killed her in fury. The frightened Elizabeth shouted "No!" This made Alma think she had cured her illness. But Elizabeth refused to make a voice again, letting Alma become her stand-in, having sex with her husband and taking care of her children. Alma gradually lost her identity in the process with Elizabeth and quietly became.
