The story takes place in a brothel in New Orleans. As World War I approaches, the situation is turbulent, but in this brothel, everything is moving in good order as usual. For 12-year-old Violet (Porgy Brooke Shields) and her mother Heidi (Susan Sarandon Susan Sarandon) and her brother, the only big thing these days is her virginity to be auctioned. As the photographer of the brothel, Belloc (Keith Carradine Keith Carradine) seems to be at odds with the open environment, and his eyes always fall on the young and beautiful violets. Soon after, Heidi hooked up with a rich man, then left the brothel with her son, and Violet became the abandoned one. When Violet was desperate, Belloc took her in, and the two began a life of cohabitation, but Violet's perverse character was unbearable for Belloc, and the relationship ended in a breakup. What the two don't know at this time, however, is that this is just the beginning of their long emotional entanglement.
