Before World War I, in Sanlis, a small town near Paris, France, Sehaffany Louis (Yolanda Moho Yolande Moreau), an ordinary-looking middle-aged woman, worked as a maid at the home of Madame Dufour (Genevive Mnich), cleaning and washing for a living. Sehaffany earns a meagre income, but she spends all her money on painting materials, and spends all her time painting after work. German collector Wilhelm Wood (Ulrike Turkmen Ulrich Tukur), who promotes "simple art", moves into Mrs. Dufour's rental apartment, sees Sehaffany's paintings at a party, immediately buys all her works, and encourages her to continue her work. Soon after the first World War broke out, William Wood and his sister fled overnight. Sehaffany left the town alone and continued to paint during the war. Life became more and more poor and difficult, until William Wu returned to France in 1927. This film won seven awards for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best original Screenplay, Best Film score, Best Photography, Best set and Best costume at the French Caesar Film Festival in 2009, and was nominated for Best Director and Best Sound Award.
