The out-of-date actress Norma (Gloria Swardson Gloria Swanson) is nearly 50 years old, and the once glamorous generation is fading away in the abandoned mansion where she lives, surrounded by his good friend Max (Eric Stroheim Erich von Stroheim). She hasn't given up on her dream of rekindling glory. The script for Salome is waiting to be written, and Joe (William Holden William Holden), the declining screenwriter who evaded debt and fled here, is the best candidate for the cause. Norma took him in, provided him with a comfortable environment to write, and slowly fell in love with him. But Joe could not accept the woman whose youth had passed away. He refused her and turned to plan a new play with another beautiful woman. They fell in love and fell in love with each other. Norma learned that Joe's "betrayal", she humbly begged him, but could not shake his heart, Norma finally raised her gun at Joe who was about to leave.
