The aristocratic teenager Rafal met the beautiful young girl Galena at a carnival. They fell in love at first sight and secretly met each other. Their affair was discovered by their families, and Rafal was driven out of the house by his father. A few years later, Rafal joined the secret organization under the introduction of her brother's friends and met her former lover Galena, who had married the leader of the secret organization. In spite of this, she was still in love with Rafal. One night, the two were caught by robbers. Galena jumped into the abyss to save herself. Rafal was mistaken for a robber after being rescued, was released after being held for a long time, and lost confidence in life. Rafal cheered up with the help of his friends and joined the Polish Legion. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Stefan Zeromski, a famous Polish critical realist writer, and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Vaida's interest in this subject is very obvious: he tries to trace the formation of Polish national consciousness. The film has attracted enthusiastic comments from the Polish intelligentsia, and many authorities in the humanities and sciences and some famous writers have expressed their views.
