The story begins with a mysterious writer, Cornelia Van Gorder, who lives in a suburban rental house where there have been many bizarre murders. The house is owned by John Fleming, a local banker. John Fleming is not a good man, he embezzled 1 million dollars of marketable securities and hid them in the house, but not long after the disappearance, John Fleming died strangely.
