In Germany in 1939, Liselle, a 9-year-old girl, and her brother were forced to be sent to a foster home on the outskirts of Munich. Unfortunately, my 6-year-old brother died on the road. After a deserted funeral, Liselle accidentally got her first book, the Gravedigger's Handbook. This will be one of 14 books that will bring her infinite comfort. She was a lonely child whose father was branded as a communist and taken away by the Nazis; her mother then disappeared. With the help of her adoptive father who plays the accordion, she learned to read. Despite the hardship of life, she found something more irresistible than food-books. She couldn't help stealing books. Liselle, a poor girl called a "book thief" by death, worked hard to survive in war-torn Germany and incredibly helped the people around her who were also suffering.
