Soon Miss Giddens found that she often saw strange images, as if the house was haunted and the children were possessed by the devil, saying or doing overly mature and strange words or actions. Mrs. Gross (Megs Jenkins), the housekeeper, reveals to her that it may have something to do with the secret affair of the late former governess and superintendent. Miss Giddens is desperate to rescue the children from the devil's control, but is it possible that the ghosts she saw were just her own hallucinations? The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in France and was nominated for Best British Film and Best Film by the British Film and Television Association.
