In 1862, the British widow Anna (Deborah Cole) brought her son to Siam (formerly known as Thailand) and became tutor of the country's king (Uberlena)'s 58 children. Through Anna, the king learned the essence and connotation of modern western civilization, and Anna also learned that the most important thing for the king of an eastern country is to maintain her dignity and the customs of his people. After a successful party to entertain foreign dignitaries, Anna and the king danced happily to celebrate, but quarreled over the king's disagreement over the punishment of the cheating new princess, an example of a complex relationship between the two as a result of cultural clashes. However, despite many disagreements between the two, they still achieved mutual respect and fell in love with each other.
