Petty Officer will Montgomery (Ben Foster Ben Foster) has just returned from a garrison mission in Iraq, although he and his girlfriend Kelly (Genna Malone Jena Malone) finally broke up after being discharged from the hospital. Due to the expiration of his service, will is assigned to the casualty notification service center to work under Captain Tony Stone (Woody Harrison Woody Harrelson). During the casualty notification mission, will and Tony encountered various situations, including being beaten and abused by emotional relatives. When conveying the news of her husband's death to Olivia Peterson (Samantha Morton Samantha Morton), will is worried that Olivia, who is orphaned and widowed under her strong appearance, can't bear it. She takes care of her and helps her many times afterwards, and the two gradually have a good feeling. But Tony was dissatisfied with will's violation of the "Code of Conduct for casualty Notification". After a conflict, the two finally expressed the deep pain they had suppressed for a long time. The film was nominated for Best supporting Actor (Woody Harrison) and Best original Screenplay and won the Golden Globe for Best.
