The story takes place after the end of the Civil War, when Howard (James Stewart James Stewart), a veteran who retired from the front, wants to return to his hometown and live a quiet life again. But when he arrived at his destination, he found that the land that should have belonged to him had already been occupied by others. In order to redeem the land, Howard had to pay a large price. The penniless Howard decided to become a bounty hunter to earn extra money, and he set his sights on the bandit Ben (Robert Ryan Robert Ryan). In the process of arresting Robert, Howard meets two helpers, Roy (Ralph Mick Ralph Meeker) and Jesse (Millard Mitchell Millard Mitchell), who mistakenly think Howard is a detective, so they are willing to help him unconditionally. However, when the three men caught Ben, the other two found out who Howard really was, so they asked for the reward to be divided up.
