John (Billy Chapin Billy Chapin) and Pearl (Sally Jane Bruce Sally Jane Bruce) are a pair of wretched siblings whose father Ben (Peter Graves Peter Graves) is sentenced to be hanged and robbed. Before being arrested, Ben hid the stolen money in Pell's doll and made them promise never to reveal the secret. Ben's cellmate Harry (Robert Mitchum Robert Mitchum) is a failed priest, who accidentally finds out where the stolen money is going. After getting out of prison, Harry finds Ben's wife Vera (Shelly Winters Shelley Winters). He tries to get Vera's heart to become John and Pell's stepfather, and Harry's plot begins. Harry killed Vera, who was worthless to him, dumped him at the bottom of the river, and bullied and seduced the brother and sister into trying to uncover the secret of the stolen money. At a time when all his efforts were fruitless, the exasperated Harry showed his true colors. John and Pearl rowed away from Harry, and they wandered all the way to a stranger.
