In 1981, AIDS emerged in New York as an unprecedented immune system deficiency disease. Because it occurs mainly among gay men, it was also called "gay disease" at that time. Ned (Mark Ruflo Mark Ruffalo) is a radical gay writer who, outraged by watching his friends die and the government's inaction, launched the Gay Health crisis Group, calling on the government and the public to pay attention to the impending plague. Emma (Julia Roberts Julia Roberts), a half-paralyzed female doctor, is one of the few health care workers who have been highly vigilant about the AIDS epidemic from the beginning, and is also an important heterosexual ally of Ned. During the campaign, Ned met New York Times reporter Phoenix (Matthew Bomo Matt Bomer), and the two fell in love. However, Phoenix was finally diagnosed with infection, and the grieving Ned had to fight between his lover and his career. Although Bruce (Taylor Kirch Taylor Kitsch), chairman of the Health crisis Group, is Ned's best friend, his style in the deep cabinet is quite different from that of the belligerent Ned.
