Martin (Elijah Wood Elijah Wood) travels to Oxford University to follow in the footsteps of the idol logical mathematician Arthur (John Hutt John Hurt). He found that the boarding landlady Mrs. Egreton (Anna Marcy Anna Massey) seems to have a close relationship with Arthur, while her adopted daughter Beth (Julie Cox Julie Cox) is always mysterious. Later, Martin met her squash partner Lorna (Leono Watling Leonor Watling), and the two fell in love. When Arthur gave a speech, Martin, as the only questioner, attracted his attention. Later, the two bumped into each other at the landlord's house and found that Mrs. Eagleton had been murdered. The only clue at the scene was a circle. The duo were taken away by the police to assist in the investigation. Since then, some people have died strangely, and the cause of death seems to imply some mathematical law.
