Five allied brigadiers were captured and held in Italy, and the Americans sent a professional deserter to rescue them. The deserter, who was originally a non-commissioned officer, was dressed in a major general's uniform for convenience. The Italian warden, a colonel from the hotel industry, made the brigadier prisoners feel at home, so that the prisoners decided to wait until the warden was promoted to brigadier general before escaping. Unexpectedly, on the night when the warden was promoted, Italy surrendered, the prison was taken over by the Germans, and the allied professional deserters had to escape from the much more heavily guarded German prison camp with a total of six brigadiers.
