The story takes place in the Scott Steel Plant in Pittsburgh in 1873. Mary (Gloria Carson Greer Garson) lives a life of mutual dependence with her sister and disabled father Pat (Leonard Barrymore Lionel Barrymore). Because the family is in abject poverty, Mary decides to subsidize the family by working as a maid at a banquet held by the local tycoon Mr. Scott. At the banquet, Mary is fortunate to meet Connie (Martha Hunt Marsha Hunt), the second young master Willie (Dan Deya Dan Duryea), the third young master Ted (Marshall Thompson Marshall Thompson) and the young master Paul (Gregory Parker Gregory Peck). Everyone in the Scott family liked Mary, a clever and hard-working girl, and they soon became friends. Not only that, Paul also had sincere feelings for Mary.
