Paul Curtis, a composer, rented a small house in the forest estate of an English woman, Mrs. Alwood, and moved there with his wife Helen and two daughters, Jane, seventeen, and Ellie, ten. The withdrawn Mrs. Alwood frightened the two girls, who felt that the atmosphere of the house was dark and strange, and that they were sometimes dominated by a mysterious external force, so that they unconsciously did something against their own will. After Jane was almost lured into the water by a dizzying aperture and rescued by Mrs. Alwood, who arrived in time, Mrs. Alwood revealed her secret: thirty years ago, she had a daughter, Karen. Introduced by three friends to join a secret group, during the ceremony, lightning struck the church spire, Karen inexplicably disappeared. Soon after, Jane, who received the signal, took Karen's place and reconvened the initiation ceremony with three friends. During the ceremony, Ellie suddenly entered the church and said in an inhuman voice that seemed to be from another world: it was a misunderstanding that Karen was taken away. After the strong wind and lightning, people recovered from the panic and were pleasantly surprised to find that Jane was unscathed and stuck.
