This Is Not a Film (2011)
This documentary documents the life of Iranian director Jaffa Panassi who was imprisoned at home for "propaganda against the regime." Panasi focused the camera on his apartment, on himself, and recorded the details of his life. He was bored and desperate while waiting for the court's final verdict on him. Banning filmmaking undoubtedly means that he will not be able to engage in the film art he loves for a long time. The film faithfully records Panasi's pain and helplessness in the face of "the death of Art", but the last shot is frozen in the raging fire and will never burn out. On December 20, 2010, Iranian officials announced a verdict that shocked the film industry: "Mr. Panassi has been indicted for participating in a propaganda campaign against the Iranian government. He will spend six years in prison and be deprived of his social rights for 20 years. These include not making or directing any film, writing screenplays, giving interviews to domestic and foreign media, and not leaving Iran. After many hardships, the film was secretly loaded into a flash drive several times, took it to the 64th Cannes Film Festival and was selected as the master unit of the 36th Toronto Film Festival.
