Maria (Maggie McNamara Maggie McNamara), Anita (Jane Peters Jean Peters) and Francis (Dorothy McGill Dorothy McGuire) are three American girls who meet in Rome by chance. In the wishing pool, the three made their own wishes, hoping that the wishing pool would bring good luck to their future. George (Rossano Braz Rossano Brazzi) is deeply in love with Anita, but because of his strapped financial situation, he chooses to hide this love deep in his heart. Maria is determined to cling to the rich Duke of Dino (Louis Jordan Louis Jourdan), but despite her painstaking efforts, it is to no avail. Francis worked as a secretary for the famous writer Sandwell (Clifton Weber Clifton Webb) for 15 years, and anyone could read her mind, but when Sandwell finally decided to accept her, he found himself terminally ill.
