At Lowell High School, the best public high school in San Francisco, seniors are under a lot of pressure. As students prepare for the exhausting college application process, they are also acutely aware of how fierce the competition is for a few places in their dream university. They carefully study every element of the application material, from their classes and extracurricular activities to their ethnic identity, which may be read by admissions officers. In Lowell, cool kids are nerds, almost everyone has amazing talents, and most students are Asian-Americans-things that usually make a person stand out may not feel good enough, or even ordinary.
