In Italy in the 1950s, the bad aftermath of the war persisted, and in the face of strong survival pressure and meagre pensions, retirees who had worked hard for the government for decades finally took to the streets shouting, but were soon dispersed by the police. Among the scattered crowd, Wimberto (Carlo Baptiste Carlo Battisti) looks particularly desolate, penniless and sick, about to be evicted from the house where he has lived for 20 years because he can't pay the rent, and only his dog is with him all the time. The landlady is ferocious, but her maid Maria (Maria-Pierre Casilio Maria-Pia Casilio) takes special care of Umberto. But Maria's strength was too weak to preserve Umberto's residence, so the desperate Umberto had to lead his dog to the streets. He wanted to beg, but could not put down his dignity; he wanted to commit suicide, but he could not give up his life; he wanted to lose his dog and let it find another owner, but the dog's persistence awakened the moving hope in his heart. At the end of the film, the picture of one person and one dog fading away accuses life of cruelty and nothingness on another level.
