Desperate circumstances can prompt a person to make bad choices. Walker Payne, who lives in a small town in Illinois, took care of his two daughters after he divorced his wife in 1957. His two hobbies are whiskey and women. In order to maintain his family and hobbies, he works in a nearby coal mine. One day, the coal mine suddenly closed and Payne had to worry about money when he couldn't find a job, when his ex-wife decided to leave town to go to a nursing school and asked Payne to pay her $5000, or she would take her two daughters away.
