Why? (1971)

Plot introduction: Italian Giuseppe Di Noi (Alberto Sordi) is a land surveyor. After living in Sweden for seven years, he used his holiday to return to his hometown with his Swedish wife and children. However, he was arrested at the border for no reason, and from then on he began a nightmarish period of captivity, transferred from one prison to another, trying to contend with any humiliation and violence he suffered. An Italian engineer working in Sweden returned to his home country with his wife for a short stay, but was soon imprisoned for an unknown crime. While awaiting trial, he tossed about between a more terrifying prison. His mind became more and more fragile, but he had no idea what crime he had committed. After more torture, he finally knew what the charges were, but he was also acquitted. Behind-the-scenes production: this film is a bitter lashing of the Italian prison system, but also dotted with some humorous clips.
