The penniless journalist Chuck (Kirk Douglas), who lives in a small town in New Mexico, sells himself to the editor of the local newspaper, claiming that he has a genius for making news. The quiet life in the small town bored Chuck, who used to work in New York. On that day, the editor asked Chuck to go out for an interview, but Chuck accidentally encountered a small town shopkeeper, Leo, who was trapped in a cave. Keenly aware of the news value behind the incident, Chuck quickly contacted the governor, the engineering team and the doctor. With Chuck's reports, people watching the rescue process arrived one after another, and Leo's wife, who was about to leave, chose to stay because she saw a profit, and joined Chuck in the same camp. Chuck arranged to use time-consuming rescue methods to maintain the news popularity of the event. The crowd continued to pour in within a few days, and the rescue scene became a playground. When Chuck was bargaining with his old boss in New York, Leo in the cave came to the end of his life. The film won an Oscar for best screenplay in 1952.
