The story takes place in the summer of 1941, when Pavitt (Montgomery Clift Montgomery Clift) has just been transferred to the Hawaiian barracks, and company commander Homer (Philip Ober) sees that Pavitt has a strong physique and invites him to join the boxing team in the army. Unexpectedly, Pavitt refused Homer's invitation, which made Homer angry and embarrassed.
