The story takes place in South Africa in 1968, where the strict and cruel system of apartheid brings a tragic fate to the 25 million black people living there. Some blacks rose up to defend their racial rights, but they were either deported or imprisoned in Robin Island prison. James (Joseph Fiennes Joseph Fiennes) was born in such a bad situation, fortunately, he is a real white man. Grown-ups have instilled in James the absurd concept of "black inferiority". As an adult, James, who has been completely brainwashed, becomes a guard at Robin Island Prison, and the prisoner he guards is South African democracy fighter Nelson Mandela (Dennis Heisbert Dennis Haysbert). Over time, James, who knew more and more about blacks, began to question what he had done-could whites really imprison and insult their countrymen as a matter of course?
