In German-occupied Paris during World War II, the playwright, director and theater manager Lucas Steiner (Heinz Bennant Heinz Bennent) is hidden by his wife Marianne Steiner (Catherine Denif Catherine Deneuve) in the basement of the Montmartre Theatre, waiting for a chance to escape to unoccupied areas. As an actress, Marianne had to take care of the theater manager and hired actor Bernard Grango (Jailall de Padio G é rard Depardieu) to rehearse Lucas's new play. With the expansion of the German front, Lucas's escape became an illusion step by step, and he had to rely on the heating pipes in the basement to listen to the daily rehearsals and guide them secretly.
