In 1865, the four-year American Civil War came to an end, and President Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis Daniel Day-Lewis) ushered in his second term. In the last four months of his life and term, Lincoln was engaged in a battle that was harder than the Civil War: pushing for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution through Congress. The bill would legally permanently abolish the existence of slavery in the United States. However, the timing of the amendment is extremely bad: the idea of abolitionism lacks the response of the people; Congress is dominated by conservative forces; and the radicals who support abolitionism are also dissatisfied with Lincoln's style. When the breakaway southern states expressed their willingness to return to the negotiating table and end the civil war, Lincoln found himself faced with a painful dilemma: to achieve a compromise peace or to stick to his inner morality?
