Little boy Jamie (Stephen Archibald) grows up in a poor mining area on the outskirts of Edinburgh. He lives in a family with extreme material and emotional scarcity, and his childhood is full of painful memories. Jamie's mother was sent to a mental hospital, his grandparents were cold, and he became gloomy and wild. Eventually he got to know Robert, a young middle-class Englishman, through the National Service. Gradually, the boy was inspired by art, which saved his life. Robert introduced the new book to Jamie. Jamie became optimistic about his friendship with Robert. At the same time, he rebuilt his expectations for the future. Bill Douglas's trilogy ("my Childhood", "relatives", "the way home") details the growing experience of a young boy. The rough emotions realized in these three films are astonishing. The position and shooting techniques were obviously influenced by du Fu Renke, Fei Mu and Ozu Anjiro. Douglas's autobiographical film has won three awards at the Berlin Film Festival, the Silver Lion in Venice, the British Writers Association Award and the Sutherland Award. The University of Exeter in England even set up the Bill Douglas Research Center, even though he only filmed all his life.
