During the Christmas season of 1899, a strong holiday atmosphere hung over the capital city of Petersburg, and the heavy snow and icy rivers seemed to be ignited by the carnival at the end of the century. Under the arrangement of fate, Matvey, the son of the lantern holder, and Alisa, the daughter of a senior official, met in the streets of the festival. Matvey's only wealth is his silver skates, while Alisa dreams of studying science and getting rid of the control of her father and fianc é Arkady.
