The female assistant researcher of young Washington congressman Steven Collins (Ben Affleck Ben Affleck) is suddenly killed. Collins misbehaves at a congressional hearing against the arms dealer Peak, causing the affair to be exposed and becomes the target of criticism. He has to go to the home of his college friend and former campaign adviser, Carl Mccaffrey (Russell Crowe Russell Crowe), a senior reporter for the Washington Globe. In the course of investigating a murder, Mccaffrey accidentally found that the deceased was related to Collins's late female assistant researcher. With the help of colleague Della (Rachel McAdams Rachel McAdams), as Mccaffrey's investigation deepened, scandals about Peak Point and members of Congress came to light one after another.
