The story takes place in 1945. Fred (Dana Andrews Dana Andrews), Al (Frederick March Fredric March) and Homer (Harold Russell Harold Russell) are three soldiers who have just left the battlefield and are about to return to their hometown where they have not seen each other for a long time. They are about to meet their loved ones for a long time. Although the circumstances of the three are different, the excitement and apprehension in their hearts are the same, and they promise to be together again. The safe return of her husband Al makes Millie (Mana Roy Myrna Loy) fall into ecstasy for a long time and cannot be calm. With a pair of children who have grown up, the future of the family of four is happy and bright. Fred is not so lucky. Not only are his parents not optimistic, but his newly married wife also haunts the party every night. For Homer, the disability brought by the war has become a heavy burden on relatives and loved ones, and he is depressed all day long in self-remorse and remorse. The agreed day is coming soon, and the three people at this time do not know that this time again is about to change their fate.
